The only ones who will be hurt are the consumers. Credit and debit industry regulation in other parts of the world has proved this. If regulation is passed against the issuing banks and networks, merchants do not pass along the savings. Instead, banks and networks are forced to cut card rewards programs, thus hurting the consumer.

Re: EVERYDAY CARD?

haha, it confused me.

Re: EVERYDAY CARD?

You are not very good at math... $6000 at 2x points gives 12000 points, and with the 20% bonus, that is 14400 points. I'd add many states have laws pertaining to gift card expiration and fees. For example, California state law does not allow for any fees or expiration of retail (Walmart, Amazon, etc.) gift cards. It's my understanding merchants must follow both federal and state laws. In other words, they must follow which ever is more strict.

We maintain of list of state gift card laws aimed to make it easier for consumer to understand here: http://www.scripsmart.com/s...

In the end, the vast majority of gift cards sold by larger national or regional merchants do not expire or have fees. Over the past 5+ years it's something I see less and less. That written, there are a lot of other factors to consider before buying a gift card. From replacement polices, redemption restrictions to balance inquiry options.

Re: Do gift cards ever expire?

Mr. McKinley, I'd suggest a little more research before writing articles. What you have said is correct; however there is more to the story. Retail gift cards, which your rules are referring to, can vary greatly. Many top retailers don't have expiration dates and don't charge fees. Open loop cards, which are another product all together, generally have fees and can expire after one year. A good retailer will have a link to their terms and conditions on their website. Check there and if you don't have that ability because you're in the store, before a purchase I suggest the purchaser read the terms and conditions on the back of the card before buying one for their friend/loved one. A great source for retail (closed loop) or open loop gift card consumer friendliness is www.scripsmart.com. They rate all the cards on a scale from 1 to 100. I personally would never purchase anything below 80 on their scale. This all coming from an industry expert (me).

Re: Unleash the power in your pocket – Discover it

I just got a Discover It card.
